Get to Know Foundations Learning! - Christies Bakery

Our Sweet Goodness partner is Foundations Learning & Skills Saskatchewan! We wanted to give them an opportunity to share a little about themselves. For more information, you can head to their website to learn more!

Foundations Learning and Skills Saskatchewan (formerly READ Saskatoon) transforms the lives of the most vulnerable members of our community through free, proven literacy programs delivered in partnership with trained volunteers and like-minded community partners.

We offer free adult, family, children's, and financial literacy programs, as well as literacy facilitator training and resources. Our literacy programs are delivered by 15 staff and 174 trained volunteers who contribute 41,000 hours annually (the equivalent of 21 extra full-time staff).

Foundations’ responsive literacy programming provides hope to adults and families that are struggling. We help people recognize skills they already have and work with them to build on those skills. It provides them with tools that empower them to: have more confidence, more fully participate in the community, make informed choices for themselves and their families, improve health outcomes, and attain better jobs and enhanced educational opportunities.

Foundations exists because of our province's long history of education inequity. We work toward education equity with a commitment to Indigenous peoples through community literacy programming. We pay special attention to TRC calls to action, 7, 10, and 12, and our work is guided by the needs of the student and community and engages volunteers. We are proud to collaborate with several First Nations and Métis organizations and communities throughout Saskatchewan.

In Saskatchewan, 33% of adults struggle daily with literacy.

Volunteers are our most valuable resource in our work to turn around this staggering statistic. Foundations Learning & Skills Saskatchewan provides training and support for all volunteers and works hard to ensure everyone – learners and volunteers alike – feels like a part of the team.

Be part of a caring and trained volunteer network that helps adults and families with their reading, writing, and other literacy skills.

All volunteers begin their journey by attending a one-hour agency orientation. They are held monthly September-May. You can register for the next one on our website.

If you have any questions about our program or becoming a volunteer, please call 306-652-5448.
