Deb Parker-Loewen's Christies Story
We have a lovely memory from Deb Parker-Loewen that we wanted to share with you! If you have a story you’d like to share please email us at stories@christiesbakery.com!
Congratulations to the Muzzolini family and Christies Bakery for 90 YEARS of bakery excellence in Saskatoon. What an amazing feat!
Of course, when I ate my first pies and bread from Christies in the 1970’s and then again when our family moved to Saskatoon in the 1990’s, I had no idea who the Muzzolini family was or what it meant to be a baker. What I did know was that Christies had the very best pies in the city. In addition to great apple, Saskatoon berry, and pumpkin pies, they made exceptional round fruit bread, lemon loaf, Saskatoon berry loaf, and… I could go on and on!
Life changed for us when our son, Trent Loewen (now owner of Scratch Provisions) met Tracey Muzzolini at the Farmer’s Market one fine, sunny Saturday. Tracey (or was it Trent… or both of them?) brought bread samples to the market for an event and Trent, who was selling bread at the market, just had to try Tracey’s bread. The story goes that Tracey also had to try Trent’s bread! I watched them flirt and exchange bread information while Trent tried to get rid of me, his mother, so he could focus more on Tracey and… her bread(?)!
Since that day at the market many years back, our family ties to the Muzzolini family have strengthened and deepened. Trent and Tracey (or T&T the Dynamite Duo) have married and their passion for each other and for baking continue to deepen. Our family has also had the privilege of getting to know and love the boisterous, extremely loving, hard working, and creative Muzzolini clan. Ennio, Janet, Blair, Russ, their partners, and children have great energy and commitment to excellence in service and in their baking. They are continuously working towards improvements and trying out new methods and tasty baked goods. Today they are making artisan breads, tarts, sandwiches, traditional pizzas, and many other products. They have also branched out to add Il Secondo to their business. Tracey, whom I know best, is a fabulous person who radiates beauty, generosity, and joy. She has recently been featured as a judge on the Wall of Bakers show on the Food Network. She volunteers with the 33rd Street Business Association and is frequently heard and seen on local media promoting the community.
On behalf of my family, I want to wish the Muzzolini family and Christies Bakery many more years of excellence and success.
Much love to all of you,
Deborah Parker-Loewen
