The Simple, but Never Boring Grilled Cheese

The Simple, but Never Boring Grilled Cheese - Christies Bakery

A grilled cheese is probably the simplest sandwich one can make. Even the name is just two words! But like most things in life, the simplest ones tend to be the best. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure your grilled cheese is just as tasty as mine is, but if you include one or more of these tips you can take your grilled cheese game to the next level!

The Bread

Where else would we be starting other than with the bread! It is going to be the base of our sandwich, after all. I’ll be frank: if I don’t have a sourdough loaf available, I’m not making a grilled cheese. Trust me, it’s hard to go back to using anything else. Because we aren’t working with a lot of ingredients, the more flavour we can get from our bread the better. You’ll definitely see a flavour boost from a sourdough, but I highly recommend using any of our flavoured sourdoughs. I personally recommend our asiago garlic sourdough

The Cheese

Shocking, I know, talking about cheese in a recipe about grilled cheese. Seems self explanatory to use your favourite cheese, but if we want an ooey-gooey cheese spread (and we should, it’s a grilled cheese!) then we need to go with a variety of cheese. After a quick search for the best cheeses to use, it’s clear there is no clear winner and a crazy amount of combinations to try. I still haven’t settled on my favourite duo or trio of cheese, so let me know when you’ve found your favourite!

A Little Something Extra

I know I know, a grilled cheese should only consist of cheese and bread, but I don’t think anyone’s going to be knocking on my door for suggesting to include a third ingredient. For our Mona Lisa sandwich we include bell peppers and tomatoes, and if I only have a single slice of ham left at home, you bet that I’m adding it into my grilled cheese! I wouldn’t dare add all three though, that would just be too crazy!

The Coating

I can’t say for certain how unknown of a tip this is, but up until a few years ago I didn’t know it, so I’m including it! I think most of us cook our grilled cheeses in a pan, but instead of spreading butter on your slices of bread, use mayo. It adds a gorgeous colour to the bread once it’s grilled to perfection.

That’s all there is to it! Simple tricks for a simple sandwich, but of course that doesn’t mean boring! Let us know what your favourite bread and cheese to use in the comments!
