My YXE Bucket List 2022

After nearly a year of living on the west coast, I got to spend two weeks visiting family and friends in Saskatoon. It was great to see so many familiar faces in the city I called home for so many years. When I left last summer, my girlfriend and I created a bucket list of restaurants we wanted to go to when we were back in the city of bridges. We didn’t make it to all of them, but we did eat some fantastic food that you need to try on your next night out!
For the first time ever, we were able to completely finish an order of nachos supremo grande in one sitting. There was debate over getting a second serving, but we thought we’d enjoy our moment of victory. I wonder if we would be allowed to bring a box of nachos on our flight back home…
Just like the last time we went, we ordered more than enough food for the two of us. After a long drive, delicious noodles were just what the doctor ordered. The braised beef soup reinvigorated us and the smashed cucumber salad was a perfect compliment to the minced pork and spicy noodles.
I never doubt the team at Primal, and I once again spent the entire meal making strange faces of ecstasy as we moved from course to course. We were celebrating my girlfriend’s birthday, and I don’t think there was a single second of disappointment the entire night. The piping hot fried bread was a great way to start the dinner off and sweep up any leftover tomato sauce from the meatballs. I ordered the mushroom risotto and had to fend off thieving forks the entire time the plate was in front of me. The goat cheese rigatoni and chicken alfredo were also ordered, and we ended with a trio of desserts (tiramisu, chocolate torte and pavlova). I don’t think I’ve ever eaten Italian and not had a pasta dish with tomato sauce, and I’m happy to say it didn’t matter in the slightest.
Anyone who knows me shouldn’t be surprised that The Yard is the second place I stopped at (the first obviously being the bakery to grab bread!). It felt like I hadn’t even been gone a year when I walked in the doors and the warm, friendly atmosphere was a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of Vancouver. Besides the pints of beers, multiple poutines and pub burgers were consumed. I am proud to say that I visited the crew at The Yard a few times in my short stay in Saskatoon. While there are great breweries and bars in Vancouver, my girlfriend and I decided that no one can beat the selection of beers available at my favorite watering hole in the world.
There are still a few days before I head back to the west coast so I may have time to hit up another local spot or two, but I am so happy to have had the chance to say hi and support these amazing restaurants and bars. The past two weeks flew by and I can’t wait to be back in Saskatoon soon!
